Artist Statement

I paint what I see in everyday life, capturing the unique moments hidden away amongst the common.  The essence of my subjects, in both appearance and spirit, are always at the forefront of my process.  I use forms, colors, and patterns of light to bring out the mood and emotions being held.  Rather than placing a strong importance on details, I focus on the impression of a moment and the poetry I see in it.  With many layers of thoughtful brushstrokes I create a sense of depth and complexity that compliment the scene.  The abstract forms that take shape in the backgrounds of my figure paintings and cityscapes project specific feelings that enhance the painting.  I go beyond simply painting what lies in front of me.  I illustrate my vision of the seemingly normal moments in our lives that upon a closer look become extraordinary.
